VICTORIA’S health department has confirmed 17 cases of salmonella linked to high tea at a luxury Melbourne hotel.
A health department spokesman says about 60 people — or about half the guests — became sick from food poisoning after $79-a-head high tea events at The Langham on July 11 and 12, with seven requiring hospitalisation.
A pregnant woman celebrating her baby shower was among those struck down, withdoctors forced to deliver her baby five weeks early.
The newborn suffered breathing problems as a result of a traumatic birth.
A day after her July 12 baby shower at the Langham Hotel, the baby’s 29-year-old had to be taken to hospital.
“If I hadn’t gone into hospital on Monday my baby could have been dead by Tuesday,” she told the Herald Sun.
Results from the hotel’s food samples were still days away, the health spokesman said.
But he said the fact there had been no new cases indicated the cause of the outbreak was no longer there.
However, the Herald Sun has revealed The Langham’s kitchen failed multiple city council food safety inspections last year, with cockroaches allegedly found there 12 months before the salmonella outbreak.
