Off-duty firefighter Chris Flaherty spotted Malone, whose brother is Boston Deputy Fire Chief Scott Malone, struggling and grabbed a paddleboard to rescue him.
But when he got out into the water, he lost sight of the actor. Three teenagers 17-year-olds Joey Binda and Elliott Chauvet, and 18-year-old John Feeney, on a boat nearby stopped to help Flaherty look for Malone, who was subsequently found floating unconscious.
They hauled Malone onto the boat and Feeney and Chauvet assisted Flaherty in performing CPR on Malone, while the boat raced to meet two other off-duty firefighters, Ryan Long and Andrew Lane, at the bathhouse. The two firefighters were waiting with a defibrillator they had retrieved from the building.and took him to Boston Medical Centre, where he remains in a serious condition, according to The Boston Globe.
Malone’s relatives have thanked the good Samaritans for their quick thinking, which may have saved the actor’s life.
Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald told The Boston Globe, “Sean’s family just wanted to pass on that they’re grateful for the work everyone has done so far to give Sean a chance, and they’re praying for the best.”
